Existing concrete is assessed before a coating system is recommended. Some slabs are better suited to cleaning, sealing, repair or another approach.

A practical exterior update

Change the look of suitable concrete without automatically replacing the slab

A coloured concrete coating can update the presentation of an existing surface while adding a finish chosen to suit the surrounding home, landscaping or commercial property.

The result depends on much more than colour. The concrete must be examined for contamination, weak areas, failing old coatings, moisture, cracking and movement. Preparation is then selected for the actual surface rather than treating every slab the same way.

Where resurfacing is suitable, the finish can be kept simple and understated or developed with contrasting borders, stencil patterns and texture. Grant can discuss practical options after seeing the area and understanding the appearance you are trying to achieve.

Where coatings can be used

Outdoor concrete around homes and selected commercial properties

Suitability depends on the slab, traffic, exposure, drainage and the coating system—not simply the type of area.

Driveways

Update a suitable concrete driveway with a colour and finish chosen to complement the property and intended vehicle use.

Patios & entertaining areas

Create a more finished appearance around outdoor living spaces while considering furniture, foot traffic and exposure.

Paths & entryways

Coordinate connecting paths, front entries and side access areas with the home’s exterior colour scheme.

Pool surrounds

Discuss coating and texture options appropriate to a suitable poolside surface and its wet-area requirements.

Courtyards

Refresh enclosed or partially covered concrete areas where an existing plain finish no longer suits the space.

Selected commercial areas

Coating options can be considered for appropriate shopfront, access and low-to-moderate traffic concrete surfaces.

How the work is approached

Preparation and system choice matter as much as the final colour

The exact steps vary with the existing surface, but a sound project generally follows this sequence.

01

Inspect

Assess the slab, existing coatings, staining, repairs, movement, moisture, drainage and intended use.

02

Prepare

Clean and mechanically or chemically prepare the surface as required by its condition and the selected system.

03

Repair & mask

Address suitable defects where practical, protect adjoining areas and establish borders or pattern lines.

04

Apply

Apply the chosen coloured coating, texture and decorative treatment in accordance with the system requirements.

05

Seal & cure

Complete the finish where applicable and allow the required curing time before normal use resumes.

Colour, texture and detail

A finish that works with the property—not against it

The most suitable design is often one that connects the concrete with the roof, exterior walls, landscaping and surrounding hard surfaces.

Available options depend on the coating system and the condition of the concrete. Rather than relying on a screen colour alone, discuss samples and combinations before the project begins.

Clear expectations

A coating improves the surface; it does not control the slab

Concrete movement, moisture, drainage problems and structural cracking originate in the underlying slab or site conditions.

Existing cracks may be prepared or repaired where practical, but they can reopen or transfer through a resurfaced finish if the concrete continues to move. The condition of the slab should therefore be considered before deciding whether coating is the right investment.

Frequently asked questions

Coloured concrete coating questions

Can older concrete be coated?

Often it can, but age alone does not decide suitability. The slab, contamination, moisture, old coatings, repairs, cracking and movement need to be assessed first. Severely damaged or unstable concrete may require another solution.

Will the coating stop existing or future cracks?

No. Repairs may improve the surface and reduce the visibility of suitable defects, but the coating cannot prevent movement within the underlying slab. Cracks can reappear or transfer through the finish.

Can coloured coatings be used on a driveway?

Yes, where the driveway and selected system are suitable for vehicle use. The concrete condition, tyre traffic, turning points, contaminants, drainage and curing requirements all need to be considered.

How do I choose a colour?

Consider the roof, walls, garage door, garden, paving and other permanent finishes around the property. Grant can discuss practical colour, border and pattern combinations after seeing the area.

How long will the work take?

Timing varies with the area size, condition, preparation, repairs, weather, coating system and curing period. A realistic project timeframe can be provided once the surface has been assessed.

Call Grant to discuss the location, approximate size, current condition and finish you have in mind. Photographs can help with an initial conversation, but final suitability depends on the actual concrete.
